The Vegan Movement: Design, Lifestyle, and Everything In Between
PELICAN
Our resident pawprint designer!
When I opened my design business in 2015, I never imagined the life it would take on. I had no idea what challenges I would face, and could not expect the design world to change as much as it has today.
Like all businesses, interior design changes drastically each season. One minute we are all about that beige, and the next minute we are all “going gray.”
As my business has grown, I have adapted a lifestyle brand for my clients that focuses on real, practical products for families with pets and children. This idea of, “usable design,” was something I always believed in as a consumer myself, and overtime it became a priority to design on that principle. T
This was essential not just for residential homeowners with great danes, and toddlers that were tearing up floors and staining sofas, but it was crucial for commercial businesses such restaurants, and hair salons that wanted products that would last and still be affordable. As more projects developed, our clients demanded products that were dependable and worth their initial investment.
As soon as I expanded all of my specified products into durable materials such as leather upholstery and wool rugs, I began to take another look at the products I was using, and the spaces I was creating and suddenly I did not like what I saw.
The turning point for me was when I came across a wonderful woman named Deborah DiMare, a global influencer for the cruelty free & wellness design movement. Deborah is an advocate for cruelty-free design and believes in sourcing textiles that are non animal based; she is truly an inspiration to the philosophy of pinkprint. I learned about the products I was selling and realized that I knew nothing about where these natural materials were coming from, and what harm was being done to our planet, and living beings human and non.
Foolishly, I expected that the leather I was selling was just a byproduct of the cow that was used for meat, and that the Tibetan wool pillows were just a hot decorative trend. I paid no attention to how these products were made, and as a consumer was blind to the entire process.
I am proud to say that I am now a certified Cruelty Free & Wellness designer. This movement has opened my eyes as a consumer through all areas of my life. As a true animal lover, I am so proud to stand behind this mission and spread the word about Vegan Design and the great things it provides for everyone.
