Earth Day 2020
The theme for this year’s Earth Day 2020 is the ever so obvious, climate change. This by far is the biggest challenge to us humans to make sure we will still have a future here.
But are we doing our part to make sure that humanity and the life support systems will have a place to survive?
I can remember my early years in school celebrating Earth Day and the importance of respecting our earth by starting with recycling. The 90s was really into the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle too,” song which was drilled into my mind at school assemblies and still plays in my head on occasion when I take out the trash.
But growing up to believe that recycling was my part in keeping the earth clean, was all that I believed I could do. As an adult, I realize it is the least that I can do.
Our environmental ignorance is killing our earth by the second. What we can do to make a major impact, in my opinion, is change the types of consumers that we are, and the types of consumers our children will become.
Do we want to support quality products that do not slaughter animals for their coats and whiskers, and monopolize on their parts?
Let’s stop supporting the billion dollar leather industry and realize that our handbags and shoes have no value over our planet earth. As a consumer let’s start to share and support small businesses that are taking alternative options to market such as Muskin (mushroom leather) and Desserto (cactus leather) who are making a major change in technology and actually caring about our planet.
Just to skim the surface of the current state of our planet, while we are in the midst of the coronavirus, with less people polluting our streets, and running toxic factories, this has led to our oceans having less pollution, and an increase in our, “good air quality days.”
There is something to be said about the daily abuse Mother Earth takes from our planet. Now is the time to recognize that change, and now is the time to educate each other about when we do move forward. What can we do to start making major changes into who we are as individuals and the types of companies we support?
